Focus—Night observation of skatepark, Team charter build-up, video portrait practice
Posted by Xiangbin Cai
In week3, we re-visit the skatepark on Wednesday at Sydenham. In the beginning, we went there in the afternoon, and then stayed in the skatepark till night, and we aimed to discover something different from daytime.
We played basketball on the basketball court next to the skatepark and started observing the skatepark from about 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
Part1–
Here below are some pictures and screenshots taken from videos:
From these photos above, we did find something out of our surprise:
- The environment around the skatepark at night is actually lighter than we expected due to the actual light setting and it is suitable for installing or inserting some sound or visual devices.
- At night, there are few kid skaters or other type of players, basically, they are grown-up teenagers or male adults.
- There is obviously a small period for these skaters playing around in the skatepark, which means they only stayed there at night for 1-2 hours, and then most of them would leave, by the way, at that night, the weather was perfect for skating.
- From some causal, instant conversation we did with some of these skaters, we find that some these skaters actually coming to skatepark at Sydenham for the first time, they were playing in other skateparks around central areas.
Part2–
In the class on Saturday, we were asked to have a discussion about our team charter for improving our team cooperation, better understanding each member’s advantages and disadvantages and finally achieving a better outcome for our team project.
We took a long conversation from a wide but specific variety of topics, and this time, we made it clearer about our teamwork assignment and set the continuous steps for completing our research, analysis, and blog submission.
Below is the basic team charter from (some date maybe change due to actual team discussion and time-arrangement):

Xiangbin Cai | Drawing, photography, programming(P5js), premier pro, communication, circuits analysing. | Movies, music, basketball, travelling, working out, video games. | Time-management,
Task-assignment |
Sometime research may not be enough and effective |
Siyu Zeng | Sketch, photoshop, 3D modelling, communication
|
Art work, movies and dramas travelling | Communication skill. Time management | Presentation skill. Easy to be nervous |
Guang Feng | Photography, programming, physics | Art (Movie, music, literature, etc), video game. | Ideas, physics, maths | Time-management |
Group rules:
1.We usually meet twice every week and we will meet more if necessary.
2.We contact with each other through Wechat App, Email and phone.
3.We make an agreement to check the discussion group every day for something update.
4.Each member should contribute as much as they can to the online discussion every time.
5.We will discuss and negotiate inside the group or consult the tutor if it doesn’t work when someone don’t participate enough.
6.From the assessment, each member will do the research separately and then combine and improve it as a team, also design the mockup and write the presentation together.
7.We all agree with Xiangbin Cai as the team leader and he will be responsible for submitting the profile and submission every time.
8.If necessary, Siyu Zeng will be responsible for contacting the tutors.
Group goals:
We want to design and create an interactive artwork with digital media for the skatepark to bring fun and joy to pedestrians and skaters. Further, we hope that will bring them some insights. At the same time, we could learn something new and strengthen our design and critical thinking skills and obtain more professional knowledge as well.

Part3–
In the afternoon’s class, our teachers, based on the requirement of each assessment, taught how to basically create a video portrait for the skater we interview in the future.
And the content of this class is mainly about video cutting and editing, sound adding throughout iMovie app, and for their requirement, we tried to make a short and rough video portrait from these videos we tool last week, when we were asked to pretend to be a skater as a pre-interview practice.
Our team after this class reviewed and revised knowledge we learned from these class, based on usage of Premier Pro App, we made an improving version of the video portrait.
Except for these in-class practices we did, we also discuss our initial and rough concepts for our design, also we allocate different research tasks for each member, background research, site research and user research will be assigned to different members, but we decide to re-visit the skatepark again and do interview and video recording together, and in the next meeting, conducting, complementing and improving our overall research.
