This week we have worked with our Assessment 1 and prepare our presentation.

From the background research, we found that the bowl and the shelter area can represent the concept of “Aussie backyard”. We think this design concept is meaningful, it original aims to re-create a backyard style for the community to play and relax, like they home.

However, through the site map and user research we found that due to users are interacting with the street/plaza area, not many people aware of “Aussie backyard this concept. We aim to bring all the visitors together in the area of the bowl and the shelter and have a playful experience.

Our group has three interesting initial design concepts that based on our background research.

The first concept is to create an interactive wall projection which starts in the early evening. The design redefines the historical concept of “swimming pool” and combines the elements of surfing to create a new experience for both bowl style skaters and audiences around this area.  When skaters ride their board in the bowl, the speakers located around the bowl will detect their movements and play the ocean wave sound to create the surfing atmosphere. On the other hand, the track of surfing which skaters create will project on the structure which located behind the bowl area. Skaters can create their path on this “canvas,” and the audiences can see what they build through the projection. The idea focuses on reinforcing bowl style skaters experience and create an opportunity for skaters and audiences to communicate.

Our second concept is Move is a sound interaction installation that contains a series of stickers on the area around the bowl. When skaters skate pass that area or stepped on the stickers, some sound will be played. When one user is stepping on the stickers, other users can also interact with this installation in many other ways, such as, skating on it, moving their body around. This installation provides lots of different sound outcome once there are more people to join in, which will encourage more visitors to play together. There are plenty of bench which can also attract spectators to sit down to enjoy other people’s performance.

Our last concept is Light It Up is a lighting installation that cooperates with sound input. We will wrap LED strips around the pillars at the shelter and the amount of shining light and color will be change in terms of different sound that make by people surrounding. By doing so, it aims to attract more people to hang out around the shelter. If people just simply chatting, the movement of the light will be slower to give them a relax feeling. If the skater slide pass the shelter, the light will be more brighter. People can try to make different noise to achieve different lighting effect.
